3 unsolicited offers to buy my PUP

Very odd. In the past month there have been 3 notes on our PUP asking if we're looking to sell. At least one was likely a dealer as it was a printed up flier. Guess they're a hot item right now.

RE: How beneficial is a slide out dinette?

We rented a pup before we bought and it didn't have a slide out. When it rained things were pretty cramped with the kids bouncing off the walls. The slide out REALLY changes the feel inside. Makes it a whole lot more livable when you're forced inside.

RE: Running Fridge on battery

I precool with shore power for a day or two and then throw a couple cold packs in with the food for transit. Don't bother with either 12v or propane while traveling and the food has stayed cold.

RE: How do you keep pests from entering your trailer?

Was cleaning some cobwebs from around the pup this weekend and a big ugly black widow scurried out to see what I was up to. Gonna have to nuke that thing now.

First trip of the summer

Somehow managed to get last minute reservations at Yosemite. Stayed 3 nights. Great views, even if the crowds were already nuts. http://gallery.mac.com/the4jds/100048/IMG_7392/web.jpg http://gallery.mac.com/the4jds/100048/IMG_7414/web.jpg http://gallery.mac.com/the4jds/100048/IMG_7469/web.jpg http://gallery.mac.com/the4jds/100048/IMG_7565/web.jpg

RE: 2 year old sleeping in Niagra bunk end?

We just used some cushions on the 2 year olds side this past weekend. Didn't have any problems. http://gallery.mac.com/the4jds/100048/IMG_7549/web.jpg height=312 width=465

We just piled up seat cushions at the edge of the bed.

RE: Lake Tahoe Area

You'll be hard pressed to find anything around the lake on short notice unless you're going midweek. You really have to reserve a spot months in advance around the lake. Camp Richardson would probably suit your needs if you could get a spot. However, the trail passes by several nice campgrounds just outside the basin. If you don't know when you you'll be there you'd be better off picking one of these. Something like Donner Lake SP might do.

RE: Bear Country in a PUP - Advice?

Don't get too worried. Make the suggested precautions like keeping a clean camp and storing all your food stored in air-tight containers in your tow vehicle. There are lots of campers around and there are very few incidents with bears. Bears breaking into cars is more of a Sierra black bear thing. As for bear 'repellent' - just remember that it's only to be used if a bear is charging you and not as a spray to keep bears out of your camp. People actually make this mistake. The smell can actually attract bears if you spray it around.

RE: Campground Neighbors

Other then gennies running late or a flat screen TV popping out of a side compartment I don't mind the big rigs. What I really try to avoid are the folks who are camping in one of those giant Walmart 12 person tents. They tend to be noisy, messy and have no idea about campground etiquette.

RE: What is the coldest it has ever been when you camped??

Yellowstone, about 15 degrees in early June. Decided to head south and out of the mountains after the 3rd night. Our first PUP trip was a little rental that we took to Yellowstone for a week in early June. We ran the furnace every night and came home with battery and propane. We didn't run anything during the day. Furnace was noisy be kept us plenty comfortable. I'm sure the temps were in the teens. Coldest we ever camped was one March at Grand Canyon. Couldn't find a spot in any campgrounds so we just drove off down a dirt road along some BLM land and set up our tent. We were in our bags with comforters and blankets on top - and were still fairly cold. Water bottles froze solid by am.

Roof patch?

We bought our pup used a few years back. We knew that there was a patch on a small spot of the roof but having had any problems with leaks. It's been a few years now and the patch material looks like it's starting to wear. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should use to add to/replace the patch material to make sure it doesn't leak in the future? I believe the roof is aluminum.

RE: Pop-ups and high winds...can it be a problem??

We sat thru a nasty storm last summer. The wind didn't scare me but I was concerned about lightning. Seems a pup provides very little protection against lightning. When we got home we found out some kids swimming in Tahoe during that storm were killed by a strike.

RE: How many have lowered the roof while stabs down?

I've done it a few times. I've also pushed in my bunks when the supports were still up, lowered the roof when the door was still in, tried to raise the roof with a clamp still in place, and countless other dumb things. I've never had a real problems thru all of this because I NEVER force anything. If I feel any resistance I stop and see what I've screwed up.

RE: Towing with full water tank?

I usually start with a full tank and then empty it on the way back. I don't mind it on the way up the mountain but don't want the extra weight pushing me when I'm coming downhill.

RE: Discouraged

I've been visiting Yellowstone since I was a kid. In those 30 years I can't recall one bear attack that happened where a bear attacked a tent/popup camper in one of the established campgrounds. We'll have our popup back out there soon.

Replacing top vent on Starcraft?

So I was washing my car a few weeks ago and noticed that the PUP had some dirt on it. Not thinking, I turned the hose on the PUP. Hose nozzle was set to 'power wash' and the edges of the top vent just disintegrated. I think I still have a seal, but I'll need to replace it. Is this something that's easy to do? I'm fairly handy for a city slicker but would rather defer to the professionals if there's the possibility I could do real harm.
